Things To Do In Belize

Belize is a sub-tropical country in Central America. It shares borders with Mexico and Guatemala. It has roughly 175 miles of coastline along the Caribbean Sea, which includes the second largest barrier reef in the world.

When you come to Belize, expect to be blown away by beautiful views, perfect weather, great food and plenty of activities for all kinds of people. Since a large percentage of the country is protected, hundreds of native species including birds, primates, fish, and other water animals manage to thrive.

When you fly into Belize, you’re most likely going to land at the Belize City International Airport (Philip S.W. Goldson Airport, BZE). Be aware that Belize doesn’t have Uber or Lyft. From the airport you can take taxis and plenty of different domestic flights to get where you want to go.

If you plan to take a domestic flight, we recommend Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. If you’re heading to Ambergris Caye, there are ferries that run back and forth multiple times a day.

About San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is an island that is near the Belize Barrier Reef, which is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere.

You can take a snorkel or sailing tour of Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark & Ray Alley, where you get to swim with nurse sharks Sea Turtles, Eels, Jack Fish and Eagle rays and Manta Rays. The only city on the island is San Pedro Town.

When you’re here don’t expect big city living, while it is a popular destination for many of Belize’s visitors, it has maintained its original laid-back vibe, while continuing to be fun for the whole family.

If you are heading to Belize with the whole family, you may be worried about finding something everyone will enjoy. Don’t worry! There are tons of activities, including horseback riding, where you can visit ancient Mayan Temples, learn about plant or animal life, and learn how and where the Mayans were living. If horses aren’t your thing, you could try some zip-lining or cave tubing.

Belize has tons of daytime activities, but what about nightlife? When the sun sets, head to restaurants and bars, where there will often be live music, happy hours, and people starting to wind down after long days. Some of the best tours offered in Belize involve the ocean. Make sure you don’t forget to go on a snorkeling tour, so you can see the coolest parts of the reef. There are also catamarans and sail boats for rent or tours in Belize. Also, fishing is one of the biggest attractions to Belize. With hundreds of local species thriving, fishermen see great success in Belize, catching more new species than most people are used to. You can also take horseback tours visiting Mayan Temples, galloping through the rainforest, it’s fun for a couple or the whole family.

These three species are catch and release only, while other species are not.

Make sure to head to the reef, where you will find tons of colorful, unique fish and other creatures.

Water Activities in Belize

With so many water-based activities to experience in Belize, where does one start?

One “can’t-miss” water activity in Belize, is the Shark & Ray Alley in Ambergris Caye. At only about 6 ft. from ocean bottom to the surface, this (harmless) shark and ray infested water is crystal clear and a perfect temperature.

You can also go cave tubing, where you will hike roughly for half an hour through the rainforest, until you get to the end point, where you spend about two hours floating in a tube through an ancient cave system, said to be home to Mayan Gods.

Don’t forget to go snorkeling a few times, at other popular sites like Hol Chan Marine Reserve or Mexico Rocks Reserve, while you’re here. With the second largest barrier reef in the world, you’ll find yourself never getting bored.

If you’d prefer to stay out of the water and would rather be on a boat, there’s options for that as well. You can go sailing on a Catamaran, fishing on the Reef or taking the challenge of Deep Sea Fishing, and enjoy the amazing ocean while trying to catch your dinner.

Depending on the size of your group, you can charter a private boat and go wherever you choose, as well. When you go sailing you get to experience the Caribbean, and relax on the beautiful open ocean. Parasailing, is a great way to pass an afternoon too.

Classes & Workshops

When in Belize, depending on your location, you can take a wide variety of classes or workshops to learn about the culture. You can learn to cook traditional Belizean meals, learn about the diverse culture, or take some SCUBA diving lessons.

You can also take drum classes, where you will learn the basics of  drum playing. You can even take traditional chocolate making classes, or just purchase delicious local and traditional chocolates and candies.
